Loki and the MCU/Comics Schism
You really can’t argue with the success of Loki. It’s fun. Dynamic. The script is good. The acting is good. The special effects are amazing. All good stuff. But, even with all the praise, I’m growing more and more concerned with the growing schism between the MCU and the comics. More and more, the MCU is gravitating away from its source material. Some aspects of the MCU are far more enhanced than the comics while other parts are dramatically weakened. My question: Is this good or bad?
To prove my point, let’s take the Time Variance Authority. I never would have imagined that the TVA would be a property that Disney would raise up high as a story element. No one that reads comics cares anything about the TVA. They’ve been in a hand full of comics and were a focus of a few stories and that’s it. No one cared. Now, they are a major plot element of a highly successful Disney+ show. Perhaps the lack of comic book depth with the TVA is why it’s so successful. The writers don’t have to worry about making mistakes with decades of comic lore. They can just do what they want. But, with that comes a problem. Some of us, well, mainly me, thought that the MCU would be used to re-tell my favorite comic book stories on the big screen (and little screen). We’ve gotten some of that, I think, with the Captain America movies. But, there has always been a need for the MCU to make the movies and shows palatable…
